For the first reflection of this series, I was moved by one of my absolute favorites, Jonathan Ogden. The sense of endlessness that comes with waiting for a season to pass can be excruciating. In the midst of a painful season, I've found myself longing for resolution, for everything troubling me to be stripped away. I felt robbed of my carefully constructed and oh-so-fragile peace. What I realized was that, more than anything, I needed peace in the storm more than I needed peace from it. Sometimes, it just takes being ready to admit that you are ready to surrender to His peace.

As the grief of the last year begins to settle, I’ve realized that my words have dwindled. It’s not that I have less to say or process. If anything, I have so much more. It’s overwhelming. Disconcerting. And seemingly impossible to articulate. Suddenly, there are no words. And there’s nothing more crippling than holding the pain with no release and the weight with no words.

One of the only things that has brought me peace in this season is music. Sometimes, certain songs articulate the scope of my feelings in ways that I simply cannot – almost as if they return my words to me with the added affirmation that I am not alone. Someone, somewhere, has felt as I do. Someone, somewhere, has the heart and the spirit to remind me that I do not walk alone, and my pain is not mine alone. They give the gift of words where there are none.

In case you needed this today, let me be your someone, somewhere. Someone, somewhere, has felt as you do. You do not walk alone, and your pain is not yours alone.

I’m going to practice healing by writing responses to the songs and artists that are currently carrying me. The ones that have been witnesses to my grief, and have given me words when I had none to give. If you find any comfort and joy in following along, please join me. I don't know if you have ever seen how sunflowers glow. Their bright yellow faces embody their namesake, with their thick green stems holding them up to the sky.
Here in Tanzania, I see so many sunflowers. Local villages depend on them for oil to cook and sell, so as we drive through the countryside, we see rows upon rows of bright yellow specks. And every time, we sit in some sense of awe at their brightness and their subsequent beauty.

What strikes me is that their bright, sunshiny outside is only a fraction of their appeal. Their ability to provide both oil and financial stability to these communities is what defines them beyond their outer shell. They fulfill a purpose while bringing sunshine to the lives of those who behold them.

However, what strikes me the most, even more than when they stand tall and fearless, is their behavior when the clouds come.
We were standing in one of the many fields of sunflowers we've seen, and on this particular day, we were taking pictures. We were looking for ones that were facing upwards, but of course, they were all curled inward, looking toward the ground. I like to think that they were protecting their energy, conserving their resources, and preserving their peace in their time of depletion or need. That didn't stop my photo session, but it certainly made me think.

A few months back, I asked God a question. Someone had just told me that I bring sunshine to the rooms I enter. And I deeply value and cherish that comment; hearing it brightens my day. But I remember sitting down after they walked away, and honestly asking God - "Lord, how is it that others see light in my presence while I feel this thick darkness?" A darkness that settles in and around me, like a deep dark storm cloud that the sun cannot break through?

In seeing the sunflowers, I got my answer.

In full transparency, I haven't been able to write these last few months. The season I have been walking through tempted me to believe that I no longer had a voice, a vision to write and share. But if there's anything I've learned, it's that I couldn't have been further from the truth. That there's something about wrestling that makes joy so much sweeter. Something about the fight reminds me that there's more to life than the struggle.

It's with joy that I return. And with even greater joy I am learning to pair joy with pain. Because the full weight of joy is felt in darkness, and it's in the fire that joy becomes worth fighting for.

It's with joy that I return to this space. To say that the last few weeks and months have been a whirlwind is an understatement. But the growth that has been taking place in me has set me up to serve you all even better. I have exciting plans for 2022, but I ask that you all remain patient as I work out the details. There's one last reflective post up for 2021, and then we will be back towards the end of January 2022!

This post spoke to me this week more than it ever has. Just yesterday, I was freaking out over an event I was in charge of that wasn't going according according plan, and as anxiety gripped me and my friends tried to comfort me, it hit me. I realized that unrealistic expectations and the anxiety prompted by my failure to meet them were robbing me of my joy. Robbing me of the beauty to be found in the moment I was sharing with my loved ones.
Friends, let's learn how to take joy in the unexpected and unplanned. Besides, you never know how it might change your life - for the better.

Vulnerability births possibility. The possibility to heal, to grow, to love ourselves and our season despite the clutter in our lives that threatens to drown us. When you look at yourself and can't deny just how broken and fearful you are, how insecure you feel, and how complex life can be - it hurts. Wellll this week was full of surprises. Surprises that made me feel undone in many ways. But if there's anything I'm learning, it's that a) having life together doesn't equate to wholeness, and b) sometimes, we need to take off our masks and come just as we are. Brokenness, confusion, and uncertainty in tow. Because it's in coming honestly that we can heal completely and be set free. And in taking time for that healing, we recognize that life isn't all about having it together. We are here for so much more. You are worth so much more than your success and productivity dear friend. Let's accept the grace to grow, make mistakes and just be present moment by moment.

This is one of my favorite posts to date. It reminds me how beautiful our capacity to love is and how fragile our little hearts are. But at the end, there is a love that remains constant, and reminds us that we are forever wanted and cherished.
